Jeremy Irons is not only a well-known Hollywood actor but also a renowned Shakespeare performer. Born on the Isle of Wight, UK, in 1948, he originally considered pursuing a career as a veterinarian before discovering his passion for acting. His stage appearances have been numerous, including the West End (London), where he mimed Henry Higgins in the musical My Fair Lady, and in The Real Thing on Broadway opposite Glenn Close. On the cinema screen he is known for movies such as The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015), The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) or the voice of Scar in Disney’s The Lion King (1994). In 2016, he can be seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
His Shakespeare performances are no less impressive. From Antonio in Michael Radford’s screen adaptation of The Merchant of Venice (2004) to Henry IV in The Hollow Crown BBC Shakespeare series in 2012, and his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Jeremy Irons can be considered one of the great Shakespeare mimes of our time.
We are honoured to call him the patron of the Zurich Shakespeare Festival 2016 and would like to thank him for his support.
